Summary:
The focal point of the CLE will be a panel discussion including CPA’s and a Lawyer reviewing new tax rules. The focus will be on the Qualified Business Income Deduction and other highlights of the tax law changes including opportunity zones, estate tax exemption, spousal support and meals and entertainment.

Kate Szurek is a principal with the Skagit Law Group, PLLC. Her law practice focuses on estate planning, estate settlement, and tax law. Kate earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Washington. She is Thomas More scholar and cum laude graduate of Gonzaga University School of Law, and obtained her master of laws in taxation from the University of Washington, which she attended on a fellowship. Kate served as a teaching assistant while attending law school, was president of the prestigious William O. Douglas Committee and of the Martin Luther King Committee, was chosen Outstanding Woman Law School Graduate of Gonzaga University School of Law by the National Association of Women Lawyers, and continues to be a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. Kate is currently a member of Skagit County Bar Association, the Washington State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. She is also a member of the Real Property, Probate and Trust and the Taxation Sections of both the Washington State Bar Association and the American Bar Association. She serves on a number of bar association committees, including the WSBA Legislative Committee, the ABA committee on emotional and psychological issues in estate planning, and the WSBA Estate and Gift Tax Subcommittee. She makes frequent presentations regarding estate planning and tax law. Kate has an extensive volunteer service record, having worked with victims of domestic violence and having served on a number of boards, including two local school boards, the Washington State School Directors Board of Directors, and the Board of Trustees for the Skagit Hospice Foundation. She is currently serving on the Board of Directors as secretary of the Northwest Washington Estate Planning Council, where she previously served as vice president, president and immediate past president. A Washington native, Kate was born in Seattle, raised in Yakima, and lived and worked in the legal field in a number of Washington counties, including for over 20 years in northeastern Washington, before moving back to the Skagit Valley in 2000. She currently lives just outside of La Conner, making her home just down the street from the cabin that she bought on Skagit Bay in 1981. Her daughter April is married to a Master Sargent in the United States Air Force and makes her home with her husband and three young children in Las Vegas.
